"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" error message in the Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) when you close the Windows Explorer window in Windows 95 or in Windows 98 (200544)

290120. SYMPTOMS
When you close a Microsoft Windows Explorer window in Microsoft Windows
95 or Microsoft Windows 98, you may receive an error message similar to the
following: This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the
program vendor. If you click Details, you receive the following error message
MSOFFICE caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0003:00001130.
and the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar closes. NOTE: This problem does not occur on computers that are running
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. CAUSE This problem may occur when the following conditions are
true: - You click the Office
Shortcut Bar menu in the upper-left corner of the Office Shortcut Bar. -and-
- While the Office
Shortcut Bar menu is still displayed, you click the Close button (the "X") in the upper-right corner of Windows
Explorer.
WORKAROUND To prevent this problem from occurring, do not close
Windows Explorer when the Office
Shortcut Bar menu for the Office Shortcut Bar is visible. STATUS Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the
Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
