How to Test Direct Mailer (200503)

This article describes how to set up Direct Mailer (DM) with minimal configuration. The minimal setting ensures that the basic Direct Mailer configuration works.

  1. Go to Control Panel Services.
  2. Make sure the Site Server Message Builder Service starts.
  3. Make sure the Site Server LDAP Service starts.
  4. Make sure the default Web site is mapped to Windows NT (intranet) membership instance. This helps to rule out any complication with the Membership instance configuration.
  5. In the Site Server Management Console (MMC), select the IIS snap-in.
  6. Right-click Default Web Site.
  7. Select Task and choose Membership Server Mapping.
  8. Under Mapping to Membership Server, select Intranet(Windows NT Authentication).
  9. Add a member to the kmAdmin@localhost distribution list.
  10. In the Site Server Management Console, select the Microsoft Membership Directory Manager snap-in.
  11. Select ou=DistributionLists.
  12. Select cn=KmBriefList properties.
  13. Click the Members tab.
  14. Add one member. Note, the user must already exist in the Members container.
  15. Go to Members DIT and make sure the user has a correct e-mail address.
  16. In the Members container, select the properties for the user and check the user's e-mail address.
  17. In the P&M snap-in, select the computer name.
  18. Select Direct Mailer properties.
  19. Make sure Direct Mailer has a correct SMTP server name.
  20. Run Outlook Express to test if sending e-mail to the user is successful. Note, Outlook Express must be set to use the same SMTP servername specified above. For additional information how to set up Outlook Express, see the Outlook documentation.
  21. Run Direct Mailer (DM): Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Site Server, choose Tools, and then select DirectMailer.
  22. Confgiure the DM property to point to the server running the Windows NT membership instance.
  23. Run the Direct Mailer wizard to create the first job.

    Template = http://computername/default.asp or any other valid and accessible ASP page.
    Distribution List name = kmAdmin@localhost

    Note: The distribution list name is case sensitive.
  24. Run the scheduled job:

    1. In the DM tool, select Schedule and choose Edit Schedule.
    2. Right-click the schedule job and run it.
  25. If the job fails to run, do the following:

    1. Check the Event Viewer logs for more information.
    2. Revisit the setting above.
    3. Check the Direct Mailer logs, which are located on:

      Windows NT directory path\System32\Logfiles\Direct Mail Logs
