OFF2000: Error Starting Programs from the Office Shortcut Bar (200157)

SYMPTOMS

When you start any of the Microsoft Office programs from the Office Shortcut Bar, you may receive an error message similar to the following
c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe

The directory name is invalid.
and you are unable to start the program.

NOTE: This problem does not occur when you start the Office programs from the Windows Start menu.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you do the following:
  • You select a folder for the Workgroup Templates location on the Settings tab in the Customize dialog box of the Office Shortcut Bar.

    -and-
  • You then rename the folder that you selected for the Workgroup Templates location.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do either of the following:
  • Rename the folder to the original name that you specified on the Settings tab of the Customize dialog box of the Office Shortcut Bar.

    -or-
  • Change the Workgroup Templates location to the new folder name.
NOTE: If you want to delete the setting for the Workgroup Templates location, you cannot do this on the Settings tab of the Customize dialog box of the Office Shortcut Bar. You must delete this setting in Microsoft Word. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click the File Locations tab.
  4. Under File Types, click Workgroup Templates, and then click Modify.
  5. In the Modify Location dialog box, delete the contents of the Folder Name box, and then click OK.

    The location for Workgroup Templates is cleared.
  6. In the Options dialog box, click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

By selecting a Workgroup Templates location, a group of users can share the same templates without having to store the templates on each user's computer. The templates that are stored in the location that you specify for Workgroup Templates are available in the New dialog box.
