XL98: Macro Virus Warning Appears Opening File Without Macro (199973)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a workbook that does not contain macros, you may receive the following message:
The workbook you are opening contains macros. Some macros may contain viruses that could be harmful to your computer.

If you are sure this workbook is from a trusted source, click 'Enable Macros'. If you are not sure and want to prevent any macros from running, click 'Disable Macros'.
If you click Disable Macros, you may receive the additional message:
This workbook contains a type of macro (Microsoft Excel version 4.0 macro) that cannot be disabled. There may be viruses in these macros.

If you are sure this is from a trusted source, click Yes. Open the workbook?
If you click Yes, the workbook opens. If you click No, the workbook does not open. When you open the workbook, you are unable to find any macros.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • A defined name has been inserted into the workbook.

    -and-
  • The defined name refers to a constant of 1.5.

WORKAROUND

Assign the name to refer to a cell address and type 1.5 in the cell.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you delete the defined name or change the value, the error no longer occurs.

  1. On the Help menu, click Contents and Index. If you are using a version of the Macintosh operating system that is earlier than 8.0, click Contents and Index on the Balloon Help menu.
  2. In Excel Help, click Index, and then type the following text:

  3. Click Show Topics. Click the Determine what a name refers to topic, and then click Go To.
