XL2000: Error Dragging Excel File into Internet Explorer (199504)

SYMPTOMS

When you open or drag a Microsoft Excel document into Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message
Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site Filename.
Server execution failed
where Filename is the full path to the file that you are trying to open.

Microsoft Excel Viewer is opened in the background, but the Excel file is opened in Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You drag a Microsoft Excel workbook into Microsoft Internet Explorer.

    -and-

  • Microsoft Excel Viewer is installed on your computer and is the default viewer program for Excel files.

RESOLUTION

This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, open the file in Microsoft Excel Viewer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Microsoft Excel Viewer.
  2. Locate the file in the Open dialog box. Click to select the file, and then click Open.
