SYMPTOMS

When starting Visual InterDev 6.0 or Visual J++ 6.0, one of the following errors occurs:
DEVENV.EXE caused an invalid page fault in module MSENV.DLL

-or-

instruction at <instructions address> reference memory at <memory address> ox00000005-access denied

-or-

Unexpected error; quitting.

CAUSE

This error is often caused by a corrupt Views.prf file.

RESOLUTION

To fix this error:
  1. Search the hard drives for the following files:
      Views.prf
      cmdui.prf
      toolbox.tbd
      objbrow.dat

  2. Wherever found, delete the files.
  3. Restart Visual InterDev or Visual J++.
  4. If that proves unsuccessful, delete the entire folder containing the files.

On Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or earlier, the folder is as follows:
    <Windows>\Profiles\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Visual Studio

On Microsoft Windows 2000, the folder is as follows:
    Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Visual Studio

Then restart InterDev or Visual J++.
This file is automatically created when absent. However, window locations and views will all be lost and the default locations will be used.

STATUS
