OL2000: How to Add or Reset Outlook Shortcuts on OSB (199185)

SUMMARY

If you customize the default Outlook buttons on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) and then want to reset them, remove and reinstall the OSB, or manually recreate the shortcuts.

This article describes how to recreate the Outlook shortcuts on the OSB.

When you install Microsoft Office 2000 with the OSB and Outlook, the OSB will contains buttons to access folders in Outlook.

These buttons are added for Outlook:
  • New Message
  • New Appointment
  • New Task
  • New Contact
  • New Journal Entry
  • New Note
  • Microsoft Outlook
NOTE: The Outlook button is not displayed on the OSB by default.

If you chose the default installation folder for Office, then each of the buttons points to:

C:\<Windows>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office

where <Windows> is the folder Windows is installled to.

If you delete the buttons for Outlook and want to return to the default, the recommended method is to remove and reinstall OSB using Office Setup.

To Remove and Reinstall the OSB

To remove and reinstall the OSB:
  1. Right-click the control menu in the upper-left corner of the OSB, and click Exit.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Office 2000, and then click Add/Remove, to start Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode Setup.
  4. In the first Office Setup dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) adjacent to Office Tools, and then click the arrow beside the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar, and click to select Not Available.
  6. Click Update Now. When the setup program is finished, click OK.
Repeat steps 2 to 5 to re-install the OSB, clicking the appropriate installation option. To install to your computer, click Run from My Computer, to select the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar.

Determining a Shortcut's Target

  1. Right-click the shortcut, and click Properties.
  2. On the Shortcut tab, the path and file name are found in the Target box.
NOTE: If you chose the default installation folder for Office, each of the default buttons points to

C:\<Windows>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office

where <Windows> is the folder Windows is installled to.

Adding the Outlook Buttons to the OSB

To add the Outlook buttons to the OSB:
  1. Click the control menu in the upper-left corner of the OSB, and click Customize.
  2. On the Buttons tab, click to select Office in the Toolbar list, and click Add File. In the Look in box, browse to

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office

    select the shortcut you want, and then click Add. If you have installed Office to another location, use that location.

  3. Click OK. This adds a button for Outlook to the OSB.
  4. If you have configured the Office Shortcut Bar to display Tooltips, you can rename the Tooltip for your new icon by right-clicking it and then clicking Rename.
