XADM: Error -1201 When Running Eseutil /d (198838)

SYMPTOMS

When you run eseutil /d /database /tdrive:\eseutil, you get the following error message:
Operation terminated with error -1201 (JET_errDatabaseDuplicate, Database already exists).

CAUSE

A folder called Eseutil already exists on the drive that is listed after the /t switch.

NOTE: The folder can be called anything; the real problem is that Eseutil is trying to create a file named the same as the folder that is already there.

WORKAROUND

  • Remove the folder from the drive. -or-

  • Add any extension to the folder name. -or-

  • Specify another name for the location of the temporary folder. For example,

    eseutil /d /database /tdrive:\any name

MORE INFORMATION

Normally, the -1201 JET_errDatabaseDuplicate error indicates corruption in the database, but in this situation, the error will occur on a non-corrupted database.
