PUB2000: Black in WordArt Object Always Overprints (198494)

SYMPTOMS

If you print a publication as color separations, and that publication contains WordArt objects, any black in those WordArt objects will overprint regardless of what trapping settings you apply to it.

WORKAROUND

In many situations, it is OK to have the black in WordArt objects overprint. However, if you need to knock out the black you can use one of these two methods.

Method 1: Use the Recolor Command

This method is appropriate if you are printing your publication as spot color separations. It also works for CMYK color separations as long as the WordArt object contains only one color and black. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Select the WordArt object.
  2. On the Format menu, click Recolor Object.
  3. On the Color list, click one of your spot colors (or a CMYK color that approximates the original object color.)
  4. Click Leave Black Parts Black.
  5. Click OK.

Method 2: Export the Object and Convert It to An EPS File

Use this method if you are printing your publication as CMYK color separations and the WordArt object contains more than one color (not including black.)
  1. Select the WordArt object.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Cut.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
  4. In the Paste Special dialog box, click Picture and then click OK. The WordArt object reappears (but now it is a static picture.) Move it back to the appropriate spot (if necessary.)
  5. With the new picture selected, on the Tools menu point to Commercial Printing Tools and then click Graphics Manager. This displays the Graphics Manager dialog box. The graphic that is selected in the Graphics Manager dialog box is the one you just created.
  6. Click Create Link.
  7. In the Create Link dialog box, click "Create a file from the full-resolution graphic stored in the publication and link to that." Click OK.
  8. In the Save As dialog box, choose a folder and a file name for the new graphic. NOTE: The graphic must be saved as a Windows Metafile (.wmf).
  9. Click Save.
  10. Open the newly created Windows Metafile in a drawing program such as Macromedia FreeHand or Adobe Illustrator.

  1. Save the file in EPS format from that drawing program.
  2. Switch back to Publisher. The Graphics Manager dialog box should still be visible and the new graphic should still be selected.
  3. Click Change Link.
  4. In the Link to Graphic dialog box, choose the EPS file you just created.
  5. Click Link to File.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
