SUMMARY

Outlook special folders cannot be renamed from within the Outlook client interface, and must be modified using the Microsoft Exchange Client.

The Exchange client is provided with the following products:
  • Microsoft Office 97
  • Outlook 97 stand-alone version
  • Windows 95 (Inbox)
  • Exchange Server 4.0
  • Exchange Server 5.0
If you are using a version of Outlook that was upgraded from Outlook 97, you may be able to locate the Exchange client on the local machine. To do so, use the Find/Search utility provided in Windows and look for the file named Exchng32.exe. If you do not find the file on the local machine, you have to obtain the Exchange client through one of the products listed in this article. The Exchng.inf file states where the client files are located.

Note Microsoft recommends that you do not install the Exchange client on a computer that is running Outlook 2000 or later. The Exchange clients uses older versions of the files.

The following steps outline how to change the name of an Outlook special folder back to the default name (Inbox, Sent Items, Contacts, Journal, Tasks), or to another custom name:
  1. Exit and log off of Outlook.
  2. Click Start, Run, type exchng32.exe in the Open text box, and click OK.

    -or-

    Log on to the Exchange Server maibox using a computer with Exchng32.exe installed.
  3. From within the Exchange Client, click the View menu, and click Folder.
  4. Right-click the folder that is to be renamed, and select Rename.
  5. Exit and log off of the Exchange Client, and log back on to Outlook.
