XCLN: "Can't Open This Item" Opening Message With Embedded ClipArt (198448)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open an e-mail message that contains an embedded ClipArt object, you may receive the following error message:
Can't open this item.
If you enable the Microsoft Word e-mail editor, you may notice that the message opens with no errors. You can also test for this error by running Exchng32.exe from the Support directory of the Outlook CD.

CAUSE

This problem can be caused by installing Publisher 98. Specifically, the version of Artgalry.dll that is installed with Publisher 98 is what can cause this problem.

WORKAROUND

If the version of Artgalry.dll is 4,0,4,1114 (note the use of commas), then you can replace this version with a previous version of Artgalry.dll that does not contain commas in the version number (for example, version 3.23 from Office 97).

To verify the version of Artgalry.dll, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and click Files or Folders. In the Named text box, type Artgalry.dll, and click Find Now.

    NOTE: It should find Artgalry in drive\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry.
  2. Right-click on Artgalry.dll, and click Properties from the shortcut menu.
  3. Click the Version tab, and note the version number.
