SYMPTOMS

When you try to open Java preferences, you may receive the following error message:
The panel "Java" could not be loaded. It may be in use by another application or it may be damaged.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are running Internet Explorer with the Apple Macintosh OS Runtime Java (MRJ) virtual machine (VM), and a Java-related error occurs.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, quit Internet Explorer, and then start it again.
