Err Msg: The Windows Password You Typed Is Incorrect (198301)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to change your network password, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to change the password for Microsoft Networking because of the following error. Incorrect password. The windows password you typed is incorrect.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if password caching is enabled. The error message is displayed inappropriately, and you must click Cancel to exit the password prompt dialog box. The password for each of the installed providers has been changed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, disable password caching.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
