PUB2000: Errors Printing Separations to Panther Pro Imagesetter (198247)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2000

This article was previously published under Q198247

SYMPTOMS

If you print CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color separations from Publisher 2000 to a Panther Pro imagesetter, you may receive a PostScript error similar to the following:
%%[Error: ESCOR screen, Frequency: 80.0, Angle: 105.0 not available.]%%

CAUSE

This symptom only occurs if you are printing from Windows 95 or Windows 98. It does not occur if you are printing from Windows NT.

Under Windows 95 or 98, this problem occurs if the screen frequency and angle settings in the Advanced Print Settings dialog box are set to values the RIP (Raster Image Processor) cannot work with.

By default, Publisher uses the following screen angles for CMYK separations:

   Black 45 degrees
   Cyan 15 degrees
   Magenta 75 degrees
   Yellow 0 degrees

While these default settings work well in a majority of cases, sometimes you will want to change them.

RESOLUTION

Manually change the halftone screen frequency and angle to ones that are compatible with the RIP. If you are preparing a PostScript file that you will take to a service bureau or print shop, you should contact them to find out what these values are.
  1. On the File menu, click Print.
  2. Click the Separations button.
  3. Click the Advanced Print Settings tab.
  4. For each plate, choose a screen angle and frequency that work with the RIP.
  5. Make any other settings changes you want and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

The Panther Pro series of imagesetters frequently use a RIP software package created by PrePRESS SOLUTIONS. This RIP software features a halftone enhancement technology called ESCOR (with optional enhancements called ESCOR-II and ESCOR-FM.)
