PPT2000: Spelling Check Fails in Text Box (198198)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

This article was previously published under Q198198

SYMPTOMS

PowerPoint may fail to detect spelling errors in a text box, although the text is formatted with the correct language and the spelling checker for this language is installed.

CAUSE

PowerPoint can only check the spelling of text that is in the same code page that is currently set as the system's default code page. For example, if the current Windows code page is 1252 (Western), PowerPoint can check the spelling of text in English, French, German, or Spanish, but not Greek or Russian. If the current code page is 1253 (Greek), PowerPoint can check the spelling of Greek text only but not Western European or Russian text.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you can change the system code page by changing the default region in the Regional Settings Control Panel.

NOTE: You must check the spelling of text for each code page separately. Therefore, if you have text in mixed languages that is not supported by the same code page, you will have to check each language separately.

  5. Restart your computer.

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Regional Settings.
  3. In the Regional Settings box, select the region you want.
  4. Restart your computer.
