SUMMARY

This article describes how to prevent the Windows Media Player Web address (URL) from being opened after installation. You can also customize the URL that is opened.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

After the installation of Windows Media Player for Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, the Windows Media Player URL http://windowsmedia.microsoft.com is opened. This behavior is by design.

To prevent the URL from being displayed (note that you must carry out this step before restarting the computer):

Add the URLAtCompletion string value with a data value of "No" in the following registry key:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup

To modify the URL to an URL of your choice (note that you must carry out this step before restarting the computer):

Add the URLAtCompletion string value with a data value of "<url>" in the following registry key
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup

where <url> is the address of the site you want to display (for example, "http://www.microsoft.com").

If the data value of the URLAtCompletion value is set to "No," Windows Media Player does not open a Web page at the end of Setup. If the data value of the URLAtCompletion value is set to a custom Web page (such as "http://www.microsoft.com"), that Web page is opened at the end of Setup.

NOTES:

  • Windows Media Player removes this setting upon completion of Setup, so you must set this registry key every time you install Windows Media Player.
  • If you must reboot your computer after Setup, Windows Media Player Setup does not open the Web page.
