"DriveSpace Alarm 11" During Windows 98 Setup (197996)

SYMPTOMS

During Windows 98 Setup, you may receive the following error message:

DriveSpace alarm 11. A program has corrupted memory belonging to DriveSpace.

After you receive this error message, your computer may stop responding (hang).

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Restart your computer. Press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.
Edit the Config.sys file to verify that it contains these lines:
```
      Device=c:\windows\himem.sys
      Device=c:\windows\emm386.exe x=A000-F7FF noems
      dos=high, umb
      rem DeviceHigh=c:\windows\command\drvspace.sys /move
```
NOTE: If the Config.sys file contains the line "Devicehigh=c:\windows\command\drvspace.sys /move" place a REM statement at the beginning of the line to disable the line.
Restart the computer.
