OL2000: Cannot Export Seven-Digit Phone Numbers to Timex Watch (197872)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q197872

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Outlook does not provide for exporting only a seven-digit telephone number to the Timex Datalink watch.

CAUSE

When you attempt to enter a seven-digit telephone number in a Contact record, Outlook will automatically insert the area code resulting in a ten- digit number. This is by design to speed up data entry.

RESOLUTION

Precede the telephone number with a comma and Outlook will not insert the area code.

MORE INFORMATION

Outlook automatically inserts the area code in front of a seven-digit telephone number entered in a Contact record. Although this speeds up data entry, it does not allow seven-digit numbers to save space when exporting to the Timex watch.

To prevent Outlook from entering the area code, insert a comma at the beginning of a seven-digit telephone number. The comma will serve as a brief pause when autodialing and when exported to the Timex watch will be ignored so only seven digits are stored in the watch.

To Export Telephone Numbers

To export contact telephone numbers to the Timex Data Link watch, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Import And Export.
  2. In the "Import and Export Wizard" dialog box, select "Export to the Timex Data Link watch" and click Next.
  3. Click to select the "Phone numbers from Contacts" check box, and click Next.
  4. Select the contacts you want to export from the list, and click Next.
  5. Set your watch to COMM READY, and click OK.
