FIX: Applying the full download of WinNT 4.0 SP4 removes MSMQ (197533)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Message Queue Server (MSMQ) 1.0
This article was previously published under Q197533 SYMPTOMS
Applying the Year 2000 update from the full download version of Windows NT
4.0 Service Pack 4 may uninstall Microsoft Message Queue Server (MSMQ) from
your computer.
CAUSE
This occurs due to a problem in the Y2ksetup.exe file that is included with
the release of the full download version of Windows NT 4.0 Service
Pack 4. This problem only occurs when you have both Site Server Express and
the Windows NT Option Pack version of MSMQ installed on the same server.
The unattended uninstall file for Site Server Express (Unssx2.txt) does not
contain the MSMQ keywords needed to prevent MSMQ from being uninstalled.
When the Y2KSETUP completes, it leaves the user without MSMQ installed.
NOTE: When MSMQ has been installed from Windows NT Server Enterprise
Edition this problem does not occur. The MSMQ program group appears
directly under the Start/Programs menu if this is the case. When the
Windows NT Option Pack is used to install or upgrade MSMQ, the MSMQ program
group appears under the Start/Programs/Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack menu.
RESOLUTION
If the full download version of Service Pack 4 has been applied and your
MSMQ node has been deleted, please see the following article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base for recovery information: 197534 FIX: Recovering messages and redefining queues after applying SP4
If you have not applied the full download version of Service Pack 4,
perform one of the following to avoid this problem:
- Download and apply the updated full download version of Service Pack 4. For more information, please go to the following Web site:
- If you have already downloaded and applied the full download version of Service Pack 4, you must remove Site Server Express prior to running the Y2KSETUP. Please see the MORE INFORMATION section for instructions.
- If you are using the Service Pack 4 CD-ROM, you must remove Site Server Express before running the Y2KSETUP. Please see the MORE INFORMATION section for instructions.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Y2ksetup.exe file
included with the full download version of Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4. This problem is corrected in a re-release of the full download version of
Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.
