OL2000: Preview Pane Does Not Generate Read Receipts (197357)

SYMPTOMS

Messages that are sent with a read-receipt will generate a non-read receipt to the sender if the message is only viewed in the Preview Pane.

CAUSE

The options for marking an item as read in the Preview Pane is turned off and/or the options for marking an item as read when the selection changes is turned off.

RESOLUTION

To mark messages as read in the Preview Pane, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Other tab, click Preview Pane.
  3. Click to select "Mark items as read in preview window." You may also want to select "Mark items as read when selection changes."
NOTE: If you do not wish to make any changes to your Preview Pane settings, you can double-click a mail message to generate the read-receipt. Once the message is open, a read receipt will be generated.

MORE INFORMATION

The Preview Pane allows you to read a message without having to double- click the message to open it. There are several conditions that must be met. Because of this, if a message is sent with a read-receipt, and the message is not read before the preset expiration date, and the message is only viewed in the Preview Pane, depending upon the options set for the preview pane, the message will not be marked as read.
