OL98: Exchange Server and Mailbox Fail to Resolve in Profile (197348)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Outlook 98
- the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
This article was previously published under Q197348 SYMPTOMS
When using a computer with either Windows NT 4.0 Workstation or Windows NT
Server 4.0 with Microsoft Outlook to connect to a Microsoft Exchange
Server, you are repeatedly unable to resolve the server name or mailbox
name in the Exchange service properties of your mail profile.
Alternately, Outlook may appear to stop responding (hang) before resolving
the items. If the resolution does eventually occur, mail performance within
Outlook may be slow. Tests of network connectivity verify that the
workstation is able to otherwise communicate with the server.
CAUSE
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator service on the Windows NT
Workstation or NT Server computer is set to automatically start when the
operating system initializes.
RESOLUTION
Set the RPC Locator Service to start manually. To do this, follow these
steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Services icon. Click RPC Locator and then click
Startup. Click Manual.
- Click Start, and then click Shut Down. Click Restart. Wait for Windows
to restart.
- With the RPC Service set to start manually, click Start, point to
Settings and click Control Panel. Double-click the Mail icon and select
the profile you want to configure.
- Click the Microsoft Exchange Server service and then click Properties.
Click Check Names to resolve the Server name and Mailbox. You may have
to reenter this information.
NOTE: The default startup setting for this service is Manual.
MORE INFORMATION
With the RPC Locator service set to automatically start, Windows NT will
fail to establish the connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server,
regardless of whether you configure the service from within Outlook or from
the Mail icon in Control Panel.
