PRJ: Tasks Not Sorted as Expected When Blank Tasks Exist (197105)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project 2000
- Microsoft Project 98 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q197105 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you sort tasks, blank tasks may not sort in
the expected order.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you sort a project that contains blank tasks in
between non-blank tasks, and the Keep Outline Structure (KOS) option is
selected.
When you sort tasks and Keep Outline Structure is selected, Microsoft
Project sorts blank tasks to maintain their relative position to the task
that they preceded.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Sort the Project with the KOS Option Cleared- On the Project menu, point to Sort and click Sort
By.
- Click to clear the Keep Outline Structure check box.
- Select the fields by which you want to sort, and click
Sort.
NOTE: If the Keep Outline Structure check box is cleared and you have summary tasks in your project, Microsoft Project will not sort subtasks within their outline structure.
Method 2: Delete the Blank Task(s)
If you need to sort tasks within their outline structure, delete the blank
tasks.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
