How to Use Basic/Clear Text and the Default Automatic Configuration URL (196928)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0

This article was previously published under Q196928

SUMMARY

When you use the default Proxy Server Automatic Configuration URL for a proxy array, you will be prompted once for each member of the array. This occurs when the default Web site of each proxy array member is configured to use only Basic/Clear Text authentication (Anonymous does not count as an authentication).

MORE INFORMATION

When multiple computers running Proxy Server 2.0 are joined in an array, you can use the default Automatic Configuration URL setting in the browser properties.

By default, Proxy Server uses the following Automatic Configuration URL to point to an array:

http://servername/array.dll?Get.Routing.Script

If your proxy array has Access Control enabled, then one of the following authentication methods will be set on the Default Web Site: Basic/Clear Text or NTLM.

If the client is configured to use the default Automatic Configuration URL and only Basic/Clear Text is enabled on the Proxy Server computer, instead of being promoted only once, the browser client may be prompted for authentication against each member of the array before the Internet site is displayed. This behavior is by design; it occurs on all browsers.
