Cannot edit a URL when composing a mail message (196869)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q196869

SYMPTOMS

After you type a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) into a new e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook, you cannot edit the URL by placing the pointer on the URL and clicking. This action activates the hyperlink.

Note You can edit the URL in an HTML-formatted e-mail message when you are not using Microsoft Word as an e-mail editor.

CAUSE

Outlook resolves the URL address to a hyperlink immediately when you typ the protocol portion of the URL, either http:// or ftp://. If you click a resolved URL, Outlook tries to activate the hyperlink.

RESOLUTION

Use the ARROW keys to move the insertion point into the text of the URL instead of clicking the URL with the mouse. After the insertion point is within the URL text, you can edit it as needed.

If you use Word as your e-mail editor, you can use the right mouse button to click the URL, and then point to Hyperlink on the shortcut menu and click Edit Hyperlink.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
