This article was previously published under Q196863

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook, when trying to empty the Deleted Items folder, you may receive the following error message:
The operation failed due to a registry or installation problem. Restart Outlook and try again. If the problem persists, please reinstall.

CAUSE

This error message can be caused by damaged e-mail messages stuck in the Deleted Items folder.

RESOLUTION

Running the Inbox Repair tool may or may not remedy the problem, even though it may find errors and report that they have been fixed.

Another method to fix this is to create a new personal folders file, copy the items from the old personal folder, except for the Deleted Items folder, and then remove the old personal folders from the mail profile.
