OL2000: Error Pasting Text from Microsoft TechNet to Outlook (196801)

SYMPTOMS

If you use HTML as your e-mail format in Microsoft Outlook, when you paste text from the Microsoft TechNet CD, you receive the following message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the following message displays:
OUTLOOK caused an invalid page fault in module MSCONV97.DLL at 0137:021e10de

-or-

OUTLOOK caused an invalid page fault in module <UNKNOWN>

NOTE: The hexadecimal code numbers may be different.

-or-

Outlook.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.
When you click Close, Outlook quits.

CAUSE

The text format in the TechNet CD is a variant of Rich Text Format (RTF). The Outlook HTML converter does not recognize this format.

RESOLUTION

Use another message format when you need to paste text from the TechNet CD.

To change to a different format for outgoing mail, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Mail Format Tab.
  3. In the Message Format list, click Microsoft Outlook Rich Text or Plain Text, or click to select "Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages."
  4. Click OK.
