OL2000: (CW) Unable to Assign a Task from a Public Folder (196785)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q196785

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other (CW) option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu, click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook, you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

This article assumes you are familiar with creating and working with Microsoft Exchange Server Public Folders.

SYMPTOMS

If you create a Public Task Folder, you cannot create a new task and assign it to another person. If you click New Task Request on the Actions menu, you will receive the following message and cannot assign the task to someone else:

This task request will be created in your personal tasks list.

If you click New Task on the Actions menu, you can create a new task in the Public Folder, but there is no "Assign Task" option in the task form.

RESOLUTION

You can work around this problem by creating and saving a New Task in the Public Folder, and on the task Actions menu, click Forward to forward the task to another person. This allows you to send the task to someone else and at the same time save the task in the Public Folder.

Forwarding does not change the task owner field. You can change the owner field by opening the task from the Public Folder and typing the new owner in the Owner field of the task form. You must then re-save the task to retain the new owner's name.
