Err Msg: Invalid Media or Track 0 Bad - Disk Unusable (196579)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Start, point to Programs, click MS-DOS Prompt, and then try to use the Format command to format a logical drive on an extended partition, you may receive the following error message:
Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable.
Format terminated.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:


Method 1

  1. Double click My Computer, right-click the drive you want to format, and then click Format.
  2. Click the Full option, and then click Start.


Method 2

Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode, and then format the appropriate drive. To restart your computer in MS-DOS mode, click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart In MS-DOS Mode, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98.
