32-Bit filter for importing HPGL graphics in Word 97 and in Word 2000 (196506)

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word 97 and Word 2000 do not include a filter for importing HPGL format graphics files. However, a 32-bit HPGL filter now available from Microsoft Product Support Services can be used with all 32-bit versions of Microsoft Word.

This file is supplied to let you import HPGL graphics files into Word 97 or later versions (or any other program that uses the common 32-bit graphics filters).

The HPGL filter does not ship with Word 97 or later versions.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Installing the Filter

To install the updated HPGL filter, follow these steps:

Quit Microsoft Word and all Microsoft Office programs.
Double-click the Hpgl.exe file to extract the necessary files for installing the HPGL filter.

NOTE: When prompted for a location to place the extracted files, you can extract the files to the same location that you downloaded the Hpgl32.exe.
Copy the graphic filter file (Hpglim32.flt) to the folder containing the Microsoft Shared Application files, usually C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt. (If your graphics filters are located in a different folder, you need to copy the file to your shared files folder and edit the Hpgl.reg file to indicate the correct location. For instructions about how to do this, See the "Editing the Hpgl32.reg File" section of this article before proceeding with step 3.)
Double-click the Hpgl.reg file. This creates the necessary entries in the Windows registry for the HPGL filter to work with the 32-bit Microsoft Office programs.
Restart Microsoft Windows. After Windows restarts, you should be able to insert an HPGL graphic into Microsoft Word.

Editing the Hpgl.reg File

NOTE: Follow these steps only if you copy the Hpglim32.flt file to a different location other than the following:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt

Open the Hpgl.reg file using a text editor, such as Notepad.
Replace all occurrences of "C:\\Program Files\\Common Files \\Microsoft Shared\\Grphflt\\Hpglim32.flt" with the path you copied the Hpglim32.flt file to. Be sure to include two backslashes between all folder names and the file name as in the current entries.
Save your changes and quit the text editor.
