How to Set Down-level Folder Permissions Through SBS Console (196439)

SUMMARY

Within a BackOffice Small Business Server, it is recommended to share folders and set folder permissions by using the Manage Server Console. When initially creating a shared folder, the console allows for the replacement of permissions on down-level folders with those of the top-level share.

Setting permissions is done by selecting the "Apply these permissions to all subfolders" option in the lower left corner of the User Access screen of the Share a Folder wizard.

After the top-level share is created, the console does not allow for down-level permissions to be changed by using the Manage Server Console when selecting "Control User Access to Shared Folders."

This may keep perceived permissions from being realized for some users. This also prevents users who were created after the share was created from accessing the down-level folders properly.

NOTE: Although user permissions could be set for the down-level folders using Explorer, it is not recommended.

  1. Use the Manage Server Console to unshare the top-level share and then reshare the top-level folder.
  2. Select the "Apply these permissions to all subfolders" option to replace permissions on down-level folders with the same permissions of the top-level share.
