XFOR: AV in ExchINS with Very Long MessageID (196362)

SYMPTOMS

ExchINS (Exchange NNTP) will cause an access violation error while attempting to send an IHAVE message with an excessively long MessageID.

CAUSE

This is because of ExchINS not comparing the length of the MessageID with the amount of available buffer space.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 service pack that contains this fix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Exchange Server version 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

The updated component limits MessageIDs to 256 characters, and will discard messages with IDs longer than this.
