Setup Fails When Running Ie4setup.exe from Web Browser (196315)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit 4.0
- Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit 4.01
- Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit 4.01a
This article was previously published under Q196315 SYMPTOMS
When you try to install the Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit
(IEAK) by running IE4setup.exe from a Web browser, the browser returns a
system "beep" and the Active Setup Wizard is not invoked.
CAUSE
The Web server is set to run the Ie4setup.exe on the server as an
application, rather than sending the file to the browser to be run on the
client side.
RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, do the following:
- Disable the execute permission (IIS) for the virtual directory in
which Ie4setup.exe is located.
- Allow read, but NOT execute access to the Ie4setup.exe file.
NOTE: The steps to do this may vary, depending on the type of Web
server. Other Web servers will need to be configured so that they do
not attempt to execute the Ie4setup.exe file on the server. They should
only be sending the file back to the client browser to execute.
For instructions on setting the server up according to the requirements
explained above, please consult your server's documentation.
- Start the Web browser on the client computer and download and/or open
Ie4setup.exe to begin the Internet Explorer 4.0 installation.
