This article was previously published under Q196146

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you paste data into a column, new tasks may unexpectedly be created and values may be pasted for blank rows that you copied.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when there are blank row(s) in your selection when you paste data, including when you copy data from a blank cell and paste it in a blank cell.

WORKAROUND

To avoid creating tasks when copying blank rows in-between tasks, create a filter to hide the blank rows before copying. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Project menu, point to Filtered For, and click More Filters.
  2. Click New.
  3. In the Name box, type Hide Blank Rows.
  4. Under Field Name, type ID.
  5. Under Test, click Is Greater Than.
  6. Under Value(s), type the number 0.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Apply to apply the filter.
  9. Copy and paste values as needed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
