Or, although Outlook may start without the error, the message may occur when you try to send a Net Folders update or subscription. The memory address referenced may vary.

CAUSE

This error may be caused by either of the following:
  • An improper registration of the components that Net Folders uses to share items and send updates.

    -or-
  • There may be damage to the files that make up the Net Folders feature set.

RESOLUTION

Follow the steps in each of these methods until your problem is resolved.

Method 1

When the Net Folders option is selected in the Add Components option of Outlook 98 Active Setup, a utility called Nfclean.exe is installed. If you run the Nfclean utility, your Net folders may be removed.

To use Nfclean.exe to reset the Net Folders structure, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type Nfclean. In the Look in list click My Computer. Click to select the Include Subfolders check box. Click Find Now.
  3. Double-click Nfclean to run the program. This utility provides no user interface as it works. You may only see an hourglass pointer briefly.
  4. Start Outlook and test Net Folders functionality.

Method 2

This method for refreshing the Net Folders feature involves turning off the Net Folders and Rules Wizard add-ins. To turn off these add-ins and refresh the Net Folders, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options. Click the Other tab.
  2. Click Advanced Options, and then click Add-In Manager.
  3. Click to clear the Net Folders and Rules Wizard check boxes. Click OK three times to close all dialog boxes.
  4. On the File menu, click Exit And Log Off.
  5. Restart Outlook.
  6. Repeat the steps 1 and 2 to select the Net Folders and Rules Wizard check boxes, and click OK three times to close all dialog boxes.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit And Log Off, and then restart Outlook to test Net Folders.

Method 3

If the steps outlined in Methods 1 and 2 do not resolve the error, you need to replace the key files in the Net Folders feature set. To replace these files, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  2. Use the procedure described in step 2 of Method 1 to locate the following files, and rename each file by changing the file name extension to .old:

    Fldpub.ecf
    Rwiz1.ecf
    Fldpub.dll

  3. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove icon, and then click Microsoft Outlook 98. Click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Rerun Outlook Setup. This action will reinstall the last installation and replace the files that you renamed in step 2.
  5. Restart Outlook. Reinitiate Net Folders sharing.
