The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q196098

SUMMARY

When any Office 2000 component is installed on a BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) computer, the Microsoft Installer program used to install Office will be installed on the server.

SBS version 4.5 can be purchased with Office 2000 bundled in it; however, even if SBS 4.5 is purchased without Office 2000, it will still include Outlook 2000, which will result in the Microsoft Installer program being installed on the server.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is by design.

The Microsoft Installer installs the Windows Installer service on the SBS server. This service is set to start up manually, so it will not take up server resources unnecessarily. It will be started, however, whenever the BackOffice 4.5 setup program is initiated.

The Microsoft Installer and SBS clients can be reinstalled by clicking Start, clicking Control Panel, double-clicking Add/Remove Programs, and then double-clicking Small Business Server Client Applications.
