SYMPTOMS

When you try to copy a bitmap (.bmp) file from Microsoft Windows 98 to a Windows CE 2.0-based device, you may not be able to open or convert the file, or you may receive the following error message:
Cannot convert 'Field'
The source image uses an unsupported bitmap format. Use the Windows Paint application to save the image in a 24-bit color and then retry the conversion.

CAUSE

Windows CE 2.0 can convert red-green-blue (RGB) bitmaps, but not Run Length Encoding (RLE) bitmaps. Some of the bitmaps included with Windows 98 use RLE compression.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, you may be able to convert the image to a 24- bit color image in Microsoft Paint in Windows 98. Note that this increases the size of the file and may use more memory than intended on your Windows CE-based device.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows CE version 2.0.
