This article was previously published under Q195895 SYMPTOMS
After you install Windows 98 on your Dell Latitude XPi CD P150ST notebook
computer, you may not be able to hear any sounds. In Device Manager, you
may notice an exclamation point in a yellow circle next to the following
devices:
ES1688 AudioDrive
ES1887 AudioDrive
These devices may have the following status:
This device is either not present, not working properly or does not
have all the drivers installed. Code 10.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because of a combination of legacy enumeration
and Plug and Play enumeration. The problem is in the computer's basic
input/output system (BIOS). When you install Windows 98, two sound devices
are enumerated (the ES1688 and ES1887 devices). Neither of them works
because they are both trying to use the same resources.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use the following steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System, click the Device Manager tab, click ES1688
AudioDrive, and then click Remove.
- Click OK, and then click Close.
- Restart your computer.
