SYMPTOMS
When you insert the second Home Publishing 99 CD-ROM or double-click the
CD-ROM drive icon when the second Home Publishing CD-ROM is in the CD-ROM
drive, the CD-ROM drive may continually spin and your computer may stop
responding (hang).
CAUSE
This behavior can occur for either of the following reasons: - When you ran Setup for Home Publishing you selected the Minimum installation option. The Auto Insert Notification feature is enabled in Microsoft Windows.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, use the appropriate method listed below.
Copy the Clip Art Catalog Files to Your Hard Disk
If you select the Minimum installation option when you install Home Publishing, the clip art catalog files are not copied onto your hard disk; the clip art catalogs remain on the CD-ROM. The majority of the Home Publishing clip art files are located on the Home Publishing disc 2 CD-ROM. The clip art catalogs on the CD-ROM are large and some CD-ROM drives cannot read the files.
You can resolve this issue by installing the clip art catalog files to your hard disk. Note: You need at least 38.2 megabytes (MB) of free hard-disk space to install the clip art catalog files on your hard disk.
To install the clip art catalog files on your hard disk, follow these steps: - Quit all programs running on the computer.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
-
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
-
In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Home Publishing, and then click Add/Remove.
-
Click Add/Remove, and then click the Clip Art Catalogs check box to select it.
-
Click Continue, and then follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing the clip art files.
Temporarily Bypass the Auto Insert Notification Feature
To temporarily bypass the Auto Insert Notification feature, press and
hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the second Home Publishing 99
CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
Disable the Auto Insert Notification Feature
To disable the Auto Insert Notification feature, follow these steps:
NOTE: If you disable this feature, CD-ROM-based programs and audio
compact discs do not start automatically when you insert a CD-ROM or
audio compact disc into the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System.
- On the Device Manager tab, click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to CDROM to
expand the branch.
- Click the CD-ROM drive for which you want to disable the Auto Insert
Notification feature, and then click Properties.
- Click the Settings tab, and then click to clear the Auto Insert
Notification check box.
- Click OK until you return to Control Panel.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
MORE INFORMATION
When you insert a CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and the Auto Insert
Notification feature is enabled, Windows checks the CD-ROM for a file
named Autorun.inf. If Windows finds this file, the instructions in
the file are executed by Windows. The Autorun.inf file may contain
instructions to install or run the program on the CD-ROM.
