This article was previously published under Q195748

SYMPTOMS

When starting Microsoft Outlook 98, you may receive the following error message:
The operation failed.
After you click OK, you may also receive the following:
There was a problem reading one or more of your reminders. Some reminders may not appear. Cannot locate recurrence information for this appointment.
The above errors may also occur while importing items from a Calendar folder located in a Personal Store (.pst) file.

CAUSE

A recurring item in the Calendar folder may be damaged.

WORKAROUND

To reset the recurrence pattern information and correct this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Click to select the Calendar folder.
  2. On the View menu, point to Current View, and click Recurring Appointments.
  3. Open the damaged item. If you don't know which item it is, perform the remaining steps on each item.
  4. On the Actions menu, click Recurrence.
  5. In Appointment Recurrence, click OK. You may receive the following message:
Any exceptions associated with this recurring appointment will be
lost. If any of the exceptions are meetings, the attendees
will not be notified. Is this OK?

NOTE: This means any changes you made to individual occurrences of
the item will be lost and the new recurrence pattern will be set.

Click OK if you receive this message.
  6. Save and close the item.
Outlook should start without receiving these errors.
