Error Message: The Server Name \\<Servername> Is Invalid (195634)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Net Watcher tool to administer a Novell NetWare server, you may receive the following error message:
The server name \\<servername> is invalid

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the server name contains more than seventeen characters. Net Watcher truncates characters after the seventeenth character, which results in the server not being found.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, contact your network administrator and request that the NetWare server name be changed to seventeen characters or less.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98.
