The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q195621

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Windows 98 from MS-DOS, Setup may stop responding while the Windows 98 Startup disk is being created. The progress indicator may remain at 20 percent, and the Back, Next, and Cancel buttons may be unavailable.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you click outside of the Insert Disk dialog box. The Insert Disk dialog box is concealed (blocked from view) by the Windows 98 Setup Wizard dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, move the Windows 98 Setup Wizard dialog box to reveal the Insert Disk dialog box, and then continue with Setup. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Drag the Windows 98 Setup Wizard dialog box toward the bottom of the screen until you can see a portion of the Insert Disk dialog box.
  2. Click the Insert Disk dialog box (do not click OK or Cancel) to bring it to the foreground.
  3. Follow the instructions on your screen to continue creating a Startup disk.
  4. Drag the Windows 98 Setup Wizard dialog box toward the top of the screen until you can see the entire dialog box.
  5. Follow the instructions on your screen to continue with Setup.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior does not occur if you run Setup from within Windows.
