OL2000: Disabling Time Zone Adjustment for Imported Appointments (195593)

SYMPTOMS

Non-recurring appointments imported from Microsoft Schedule+ into Microsoft Outlook 2000 may be off by one hour.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the receiving computer had its time zone changed from a time zone with daylight savings time (such as Pacific time) to a time zone that does not support daylight savings time (such as Arizona time). This can result in the daylight savings option being set, although it is not valid for the new time zone.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods, and then remove and re-import the appointments:

  • Change the computer's time zone back to the old time zone that had daylight savings time selected. Then, turn off the daylight savings time option and reselect the new time zone.

    -or-
  • Make a modification to the system registry to turn off daylight savings time.

Outlook expresses the time assigned to non-recurring appointments in the imported schedule file as Greenwich mean time (GMT). When importing, Outlook applies the current time zone data to the GMT to compute the actual time to schedule the incoming appointments. Changing the time zone after the import is complete does not affect the time computed during the import process. Therefore, the following procedures will not correct the time of appointments imported with an invalid daylight savings time setting. You must manually correct, or remove and reimport appointments with incorrect times, using the correct time zone and daylight savings time settings.

Clearing the Daylight Savings Time Option

To clear the Daylight Savings Time option, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and click Date/Time.
  2. On the Time zone tab, notice that the check box to "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes" is selected although it is unavailable (grayed out).
  3. In the list of time zones, click to select the old time zone that had daylight savings time selected.
  4. Click to clear the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes" check box and click Apply.
  5. In the list of time zones, click to select the new time zone that does not support daylight savings time and click Apply.

    Notice that the option to "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes" is no longer selected.
  6. Click OK.

Modifying the Registry to Turn Off Daylight Savings Time

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. On the File menu, click Exit And Log Off.
  2. Click the Start button, and point to Run. In the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and click OK to run the Windows Registry Editor.
  3. In the left pane, move to and click to select the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control \TimeZoneInformation

  4. Right-click the TimeZoneInformation key, point to New and click to select DWORD Value.
  5. Type a name of "DisableAutoDaylightTimeSet" (without the quotation marks).
  6. Double-click the new DWORD entry and change its value to "1" (without the quotation marks).
