OL2000: ErrMsg: A Fatal Exception Error 06 Has Occurred (195587)

SYMPTOMS

When opening a message in Microsoft Outlook 2000, you may receive the following error message:
A Fatal Exception Error 06 has occurred.

CAUSE

This may be caused by using Windows Graphics Acceleration.

RESOLUTION

Turn off Windows Graphics Acceleration.

Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

To Turn Off Windows Graphics Acceleration

  1. Quit Outlook and any other open programs.
  2. Right-click My Computer, and on the shortcut menu, click Properties.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.
  4. Under Advanced Graphics Settings, drag the Hardware acceleration slider to None.
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
  6. Click Yes to restart your computer.
If you receive an Invalid Page Fault in Omipst9.dll when you follow the steps to turn off Windows Graphics Acceleration, rename the Omipst9.dll file to Omipst9.old, and then run the Detect and Repair utility:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, double-click either Office 2000 or Outlook 2000, as applicable.
  3. Click either Repair Office or Repair Outlook, as applicable.
  4. Click either Repair errors in my Office installation or Repair errors in my Outlook installation (as applicable), and then click Finish.
