Overview

In Europe, a new currency called the Euro has been created. In a few months, Euro notes and coins will be used as legal tender in several European countries.

Like the United States dollar, the British pound sterling, and the Japanese yen, the Euro has a distinctive symbol. The new Euro symbol resembles the capital letter "C" with two horizontal lines through the center of the "C".

Support for the Euro symbol in Works for Windows is dependent on the operating system and fonts you are using.

Operating System Support for the Euro

Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows 2000:

Windows 98 and Windows 2000 include native support for the Euro symbol using the following fonts:

• Arial
• Courier New
• MS Sans Serif
• Times New Roman

Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:

None of the code pages and fonts included with Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 include native support for the Euro symbol.

However, you can download code pages and fonts that allow you to use the Euro symbol in Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.

The Euro currency update for Windows 95 includes the following Euro-compatible fonts:

Using the Euro Symbol in Works

How to type the Euro symbol:

To type the Euro symbol, first make sure that you are using a font that supports the Euro symbol, and then follow these steps:

1. Press and hold down the ALT key.
2. Using the numeric keypad, type 0128.
3. Release the ALT key.

Works for Windows word processor:

You can view, edit, and save the Euro symbol in a Works for Windows word processing document when you use Arial, Courier New, Times New Roman, or any Euro-compatible font you have downloaded. In addition, if you are using Windows 98 or Windows 2000, you can view, edit, and save documents using the MS Sans Serif font.

Works for Windows spreadsheet and database:

You can view, edit, and save the Euro symbol in a Works for Windows database or spreadsheet document when you use Arial, Courier New, Times New Roman, or any Euro-compatible font you have downloaded. In addition, if you are using Windows 98 or Windows 2000, you can view, edit, and save documents using the MS Sans Serif font.

NOTE: When you use the Euro symbol in a spreadsheet or database on a Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0-based computer, the Format Cells dialog box in a spreadsheet or the Format Field dialog box in a database display the Euro currency symbol as a vertical line. This issue occurs because these dialog boxes use the MS Sans Serif font and this font is not compatible with the Euro symbol on these operating systems.

If you have database and spreadsheet documents containing currency symbols that you want to change to Euro symbols, you can change the currency setting in the Windows Regional Settings tool in Control Panel to automatically convert the currency symbols to the Euro symbol. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Regional Settings.
3. On the Regional Settings box, click the country you want, and then click Apply.
4. Click the Currency tab.
5. In the Currency Symbol box, click the Euro symbol.
6. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

When you open your spreadsheet and database files, the currency symbol is automatically converted to the Euro symbol.

NOTE: Changing your Regional Settings in Windows changes your regional information in all programs you use in Windows.

Microsoft Works Calendar:

You are not able to view, edit, save or print from Microsoft Works on a Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0-based computer even if the Euro support update is installed unless you have downloaded and installed the Tahoma font with Euro symbol support. Works Calendar uses the Tahoma font to display text and you cannot change the font in Works Calendar.

Microsoft Works dictionary:

The Euro symbol is not flagged as a misspelled word, but the word "Euro" is flagged by the dictionary. You can add "Euro" to your custom dictionary by clicking Add when the spell checker flags the word.

Printing the Euro Symbol

To print the Euro symbol, your printer must be able to print text as as graphics or be able to print TrueType fonts as bitmap soft fonts.
