OL98: Error While Importing Digital ID (195420)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to import your digital ID, you may get the following error message:
An error occurred while trying to import security information

CAUSE

When you signed up for a digital ID from Verisign, you requested the Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0 service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it

To resolve the problem you must edit the registry and then import the Digital ID.

Edit the Registry

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. On the Start menu, click Run.
  3. Type regedit and click OK.
  4. Go to the following key:

    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Defaults\ Provider Types\Type 001

  5. In the right-hand window, click, Name and in the Value Data box, type Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0.
  6. Start Outlook and begin the import process again.

Import a Digital ID

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Security tab click Import/Export Digital ID.
  3. Type the filename, password, and Keyset for the ID.
  4. Click OK, and OK to close all windows.
