SUMMARY

To use the Web-based workgroup features in Microsoft Project 98, you must have access to a Web server. This article describes how to install Microsoft Personal Web Server 4.0 on a computer running Microsoft Windows 98 and how to configure it to work with Microsoft Project 98.

The following steps are required for setting up workgroup features.

Step 1: Install the Microsoft Personal Web Server

  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows 98 compact disc in your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type <drive>:\add-ons\pws\Setup.exe (where <drive> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). Click OK.

    The Personal Web Server Setup program starts.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  5. When prompted, click Yes to restart your computer.

Step 2: Configure Microsoft Personal Web Server

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Internet Explorer, point to Personal Web Server and then click Personal Web Manager.
  2. In Personal Web Manager, click Advanced.
  3. Select <Home>.
  4. Click Add.
  5. In the Add Directory dialog box, in the Directory edit box, type the path to the directory where you want the Microsoft Project 98 workgroup files to be located. For example:

    c:\inetpub\wwwroot\project98.

  6. In the Alias edit box, type the name of the virtual directory you want to use. For example Project98.
  7. Click to select Read, Execute and Scripts. Click OK.
  8. If prompted to create the new folder, click OK.
  9. On the Properties menu, click Exit.

Step 3: Prepare Microsoft Project to Use Web-Based Workgroup Features

Microsoft Project supports three transport methods for the workgroup features:

  • By e-mail (MAPI)
  • By Web
  • By e-mail and Web
  1. Start Microsoft Project.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Workgroup tab.
  3. In the Default Workgroup Messaging For Resources list, click Web Or Email And Web.
  4. Enter the appropriate URL in the Web Server URL (for resource) box and the appropriate path in the Web Server Root (for manager) box.

    For example, the URL might point to a Web server set up on the project manager's computer. If the network identification for that computer is ProjectManager, and the name of the folder created for holding the workgroup messages is Project98, then the URL for that computer would be as follows:

    http://projectmanager/project98

  5. Click OK.
NOTE: If you are prompted to copy files to the new workgroup messaging location, click Yes.

You can now use Microsoft Project 98 with your personal Web.
