SYMPTOMS

If you are using Microsoft Outlook on a Gateway Solo 2300 notebook computer, you may be unable to select text by dragging with the mouse. This problem is reported to occur when using the notebook computer with a port replicator docking station and an external mouse.

CAUSE

The Gateway 2300 has a Synaptics TouchPad and comes installed with the Synaptics driver, which loads on start up. This driver may prevent the external mouse from being able to select text in the body of an Outlook message. This problem may also occur with other notebooks using the Synaptics touchpad and software.

RESOLUTION

Remove the Synaptics Touchpad from the "docked" hardware configuration in Device Manager and restart the computer. The default mouse driver will load and you should still be able to use the external mouse while docked. Since you only change the docked hardware configuration, the touchpad will still work when you are not docked.

MORE INFORMATION

The Synaptics driver is listed as "syntpenh" in the Windows Task Manager.
