This article was previously published under Q195229 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Windows 98 from CD-ROM and your computer
restarts, your floppy disk drive light may activate, and you may receive
the following error message:
Bad command of file name
Path not found - :\COMMAND.COM
Path not found - extract.exe
Path not found - readme.txt
Please insert Windows 98 Startup Disk 2
Press any key to continue
If you then press a key to continue, you may receive the following prompt
and your floppy disk drive light may continue to be activated:
Please insert Windows 98 Startup Disk 2
Press any key to continue
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Autoexec.bat file and Config.sys file on
your hard disk are copies of the same files on the Windows 98 Startup
disk.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, rename the Autoexec.bat file Config.sys files on
your hard disk. To do so, follow these steps:
- Restart your computer, press and hold CTRL until the Windows 98 Startup
menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.
- At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER
after each line:
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.xxx
ren config.sys config.xxx
- Restart your computer.
