SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 98, you may not hear any sounds (such as dialing or handshaking) from your Sound III 336SP or Sound 4 modem or your LT WinModem when you try to establish a modem connection.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the modem is muted during Windows 98 Setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, turn on the volume for your modem using the Volume Control tool:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Volume Control.
  2. On the Options menu, click Properties.
  3. In the Show The Following Volume Controls box, click the Modem check box to select it. For an LT WinModem, click the Phone Line check box to select it.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Under Modem, click the Mute check box to clear it.
