PUB98: Missing Pubole98.dll Error Starting Publisher (195091)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Publisher, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Error Starting Program

A required .DLL file, PUBOLE98.DLL, was not found.

-or-

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\MSPUB.EXE

A device attached to the system is not functioning.
If you click OK, you may see the following additional message:
Error Starting Program

The C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\PUBOLE98.DLL file apprears to be corrupt. Reinstall the file, and then try again.

CAUSE

This error message occurs if the Pubole98.dll file is missing or has been corrupted.

RESOLUTION

Search your hard disk for all copies of Pubole98.dll. You should only have one copy. This copy should be in the following folder by default:
   C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
				
This file will have the following properties:
                      Publisher 98
                      ------------
  Date:               12/8/97
  Size:               101,888 bytes
  Version #:          5.0
				
Delete or rename any copies of this file that don't match these criteria.

NOTE: You may need to reinstall Publisher to reinstall the correct, uncorrupted file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft product listed at the beginning of this article.
